Can Architects be Replaced by AI?

Lets discuss Artificial intelligence is changing the way we design and construct. By 2050, the consequences of AI adoption will be seen in virtually every facet of our everyday life. As the globe grapples with a slew of pressing and complicated issues, ranging from climate change to housing, AI has the potential to mean the difference between a dystopian and livable future. We are already suffering the consequences of AI adoption, even if we are not aware of it.


Most industries have been impacted by artificial intelligence, but what about architecture? Architecture straddles the line between art and engineering. While Artificial Intelligence may handle the engineering parts, can it replace the creative side?


 

1. AI can't handle every situation.


Though AI may generate outputs from previously stored data and knowledge, it cannot curate one on its own. An architect puts himself or herself in the shoes of the customer and attempts to determine the best solutions. AI is based on predetermined information and does not address the emotional component. AI does not have the ability to make decisions on its own, yet decision making is one of the most important abilities that humans possess. AI can provide you with a collection of plausible solutions given a set of facts and constraints. However, people still have the conscience and understanding to pick and finish one of them.


2. The repetitious duties could be replaced by AI.


While designing can be fun and exciting, several repetitive tasks that drain an architect’s time and energy. Redrafting and revising drawings will be taken over by Artificial Intelligence which would render precise and accurate drawings. This would also mean that the architect would be left with a lot of time in hand to focus on the design. Once the mundane jobs are taken away, the designer can put in those hours to blow in soul to the project. Creativity comes from a human end and thus we have a long way to go.



3. AI as the foundation

Research is the initial step in the design process. Up to 75% of the entire design process would be spent looking back at the previous works and data. This could speed up the design process by providing the architect with all the essential information in a couple of seconds thanks to a robust data storage and review system. A design approach would entail working with the barest of knowledge, especially in the very beginning stages of work. This is where AI comes into play, assisting the designer with its ability to quickly evaluate and compile facts and information.


4. AI as the chief juror

Trial and error have been a hazardous device in engineering. A plan's solidness, strength, and execution couldn't be evaluated before. Gone are those days.
